The untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is out so it seems like a good time to unlock our iPhone 3GS for T-Mobile. This is a moderately difficult process and just requires that you pay careful attention. This will work on any 3GS that was built before the 35th week of 2011. You can check this by going into Settings/General/About and scrolling to your serial number. The 3rd 4th and 5th number should be less than 135. Chances are your iPhone is below this number as only new 3Gs’s are affected. If you try to unlock and your iPhone is one of the newer models you will PERMANENTLY DESTROY the cellular radio on your phone. Double check your serial number before you start.
You will need to download Redsn0w 0.9.10b3 and your 5.0.1 official firmware.
Redsn0w 0.9.10b3 for Windows: Windows Redsn0w 0.9.10b3
Redsn0w 0.9.10b3 for Mac: Windows Redsn0w 0.9.10b3
iPhone 3Gs 5.0 Official IPSW Firmware: iPhone 3Gs 5.0.1
Step 1. Remove any Sim card from your iPhone and go ahead and Update or Restore it to 5.0.1 In order raise chances of success ONLY if it doesn’t have the 6.15.00 baseband. Once that is complete run Redsn0w and select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then click back and select Jailbreak. Now on the options menu check “Install Cydia” & “Install iPad Baseband”.
Step 2: Place the iPhone into DFU mode and run the jailbreak/Baseband Flashing by clicking next.
Step 3. Once the Jailbreak & Baseband Flashing is finished go ahead and open Cydia and wait for it to finish loading, then search for “Ultrasn0w” and install. It will ask you to respring and make sure to reboot after that.
Step 4. Your iPhone is now unlocked so go ahead and insert your sim card. If do not see service right away go into Setting/General/Network then turn 3g off. You should be able to restart your device and see service.
